BBQ bees.

Posted in Editor's choice, Insects, Oddly enough, Photos on November 21st, 2008 by PM

So I’m using my BBQ this weekend… So I thought I’ll clean it up… I have known there were some bees coming from under the cover so I thought I’d kill them, obviously… Here’s the BBQ in question.
Now I know these bombs aren’t for bees but I thought I’ll suffocate/smoke them out. So here is the weapon of choice and delivery system.

I thought I was pretty smart hehehe designed to be easily maneuvered under the cover of darkness… So then I release the weapon of buzz destruction…

OMFG! the sound from under the cover was incredible! !! You could hear it 3m away… Then I ran like the clappers… Read the rest of this entry »

Super kingdom.

Posted in Artworks, Birds, Oddly enough on October 15th, 2008 by PM

Super Kingdom is a development of new animal habitats within King’s Wood, England. These luxury homes are modeled on the imperious palaces of Stalin, Ceauscescu, and Mussolini and offer nesting and over-winter sites to native and migrant species.

london fieldworks (bruce gilchrist & jo joelson) is an art duo fittingly based in london. their newly commissioned work ’super kingdom’ is based on research of animal hibernation patterns in england’s king’s wood forest. the artists will be presenting a series of site specific show homes in the forest beginning on september 21st. the homes are not only for the exhibit but will also serve as the subject for a video/animation work to be shot over the winter. the show is a direct comment on the human population in the forest’s surrounding region, drawing parallels to the animal kingdom. you can visit super kingdom from september 21 at stour valley arts in kent.

Top two photos from Wired magazine [wired 15.11] discussing cloning. “The other other white meat”—it looks the same, it cooks the same, it tastes the same. but this pig, a Hampshire from Indiana name Nelly, is a clone. And cloned bacon? It may already be at your supermarket. The second photo deck copy reads “My fist-size chop is glazed in a sugary, thick-as-molasses marinade. It tastes better than anything I’ve had at a restaurant—moist, succulent, and wonderfully tender.Read the rest of this entry »

can anyone identify this snake?

Snakes, like other reptiles, have a skin covered in scales. Snakes are entirely covered with scales or scutes of various shapes and sizes. Scales protect the body of the snake, aid it in locomotion, allow moisture to be retained within, alter the surface characteristics such as roughness to aid in camouflage, and in some cases even aid in prey capture (such as Acrochordus). The simple or complex colouration patterns (which help in camouflage and anti-predator display) are a property of the underlyingskin, but the folded nature of scaled skin allows bright skin to be concealed between scales then revealed in order to startle predators.

Scales have been modified over time to serve other functions such as ‘eyelash’ fringes, and protective covers for the eyes[2] with the most distinctive modification being the rattle of the North American rattlesnakes. Read the rest of this entry »

Watch for ice.

I am snug as a bug in a rug working at home today. On the lakefront in Chicago with the sun shining and no wind and the lake keeping the air temp a warm 5 degrees F. The walk to get my vente triple non-fat white moca at Starbuck’s is treacherous.

Dead pet stories.

Posted in Death, Editor's choice, Fish, Gross, Mammals, Reader's choice, Stories on May 8th, 2007 by PM

I woke up at 6:30 this morning to take my ex-roommate’s cat to the vet. I guess he’s my cat now. His name is Max and he’s a very skinny orange tabby cat. He came complete with a fifteen second memory span and he has only one facial expression, which is blank. I often wonder if he was somebody’s genetic cloning experiment. That or if he is suffering from fetal alcohol syndrome. He’s just a living cat with barely a hint of character.

max-cat.jpg

I’m trying to give him a personality but it’s difficult. I wonder if my techniques are working. The first technique is to hold him tightly against my chest and speak nonsense to him, kiss his face really hard, and then let him jump out of my arms to freedom. This does not seem to have any effect on him. He just looks mildly bewildered. The second technique is to spank his rump playfully. Again, there’s not much response. Not even the cliché look of superiority most normal cats constantly wear. But I haven’t picked Max up in days and have hardly petted him. I’ve even locked him out of my room. I’m disgusted by him right now. To get my mind off him I think about today’s homework. My teacher wants me to write about something I know a lot about. I glance at a picture of Evan, framed and sitting on my nightstand, where I can see it every night before I go to sleep. I think about Evan’s life and its tragic ending. I wonder if I should write about him. Read the rest of this entry »
