Polar bears feeling more heat.

Posted in Endangered, Issues/Opinions, Mammals on March 17th, 2008 by PM

A few posts ago PM presented incredible polar bear photos. The images by themselves are remarkable. But the polar bear is more than the largest predator on this planet. They have become a global warming symbol. It’s an easy analogy. The bears live on ice. The ices is melting. Easy picture here. Here is another polar bear story, and another global warming hot-spot.

The bears may have more problems…

polarrug1.jpg

Today Salon.com. comes to the forefront highlighting yet another polar bear worry. Part of their story is in this post with a link to the full story…

If your idea of a good time is paying $25,000 to journey to the frozen north in Canada to shoot a polar bear—making you one of the more than 50 American “sportsmen” who do so every year—you’re not happy about the lawsuits and recriminations over whether the Bush administration should grant new protections to polar bears. After all, those darn regulations could interfere with your bringing home a furry white rug for your living room floor.

In the reams of press about the increasing deaths of polar bears, the role of trophy hunters and the Inuit who help them is often missing. In the Canadian territories where the polar bear lives, the government sets quotas for the number of bears that can be hunted each year. The Canadian Inuit, who are paid by hunters to help them stalk the bears, and American hunting associations have become vocal adversaries to environmentalists and Congress members who in recent months have battled the Department of Interior, with its Bush-Cheney oil connections, to safeguard the polar bear.

Today, there are between 20,000 and 25,000 polar bears worldwide, according to the World Conservation Union Species Survival Commission’s Polar Bear Specialist Group, which lists the species as “vulnerable.” Between 700 and 900 polar bears are shot every year, the majority of those taken in Canada, according to Andrew Derocher, a biologist at the University of Alberta, who chairs the Polar Bear Specialist Group. Of the approximately 600 polar bears shot in Canada, about 15 percent of those are killed by sports hunters, many of them American, who pay between $20,000 to $35,000 for the chance to do so. Uno being the first beagle to win the Westminister Kennel Club Show in 132 events got PM thinking. What is, if any, is the significance of this win, for a beagle? For the “beagle” to win “Best of Show” what are the odds? The following are “unofficial” statistics quickly taken from the WKC site:

Numero “Uno” top dog! Best of show 08.

And the envelope please…

Best in show! first beagle in 132 dog shows!

How it works…
The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is among the world’s most prestigious ”conformation” shows, meaning dogs are judged by how closely they conform to breed standards of build and appearance.

To qualify, dogs must have won an American Kennel Club title.

To do that, they compete in dozens of local, regional and national AKC-sanctioned shows a year, earning points.

Dogs compete in seven groups—herding, working, sporting, non-sporting, toy, hound and terrier—all of which encompass many breeds.

That’s the first level of competition.

Best of Breed winners then compete against each other for Best of Group. The seven Best of Group winners go on to compete for the coveted Best in Show title.

Best of Opposite Sex is awarded only at the Best of Breed level, and that dog does not advance. For example, if the best Labrador Retriever is a male, the most outstanding Labrador female would win Best of Opposite Sex.

Judges are also free to give Awards of Merit to worthy dogs at the Best of Breed level.

A little curiosity goes further: several associations and his and her offerings in elephant polo accessories: puffers, scarfs, T-shirts.

This from Elepolo: Elepolo is the official clothing range for the World Elephant Polo Association, it has been developed and sold in connection with the yearly WEPA tournaments at Tiger Tops in Chitwan, Nepal.

At the heart of Elephant Polo and the Elepolo clothing range lies the love of the elephants to ensure that they are well-looked after and cared for.
5% of the sales of the Elepolo items are donated to the International Trust for Nature and Conservation supporting the protection and coservation of endangered species in Nepal, Thailand and India (itnc.org).

Elepolo through their cooperation with Joules clothing also supports the Esther Benjamin Trust in Nepal, which among other things are working with former prison children, former street children and children rescued from circuses (ebtrust.org.uk).

Pick me ups:
Sugar cane or rice balls packed with vitamins (molasses and rock salt) shall be given to the elephants at the end of the match; and a cold beer, or soft drinks for the drivers, but not vice versa.
