You dirty dog.

Posted in Humor, Names on October 22nd, 2008 by PM

Dog groomers, boarders, walking services, vets, shelters, pet stores, all over the world have given us good belly laughs, uncontrolled smiley’s, upon seeing the name of the business. I came across one over the weekend that inspired this post. You dirty dog. I happened to see it in Chicago. The post image is from Sandy, Oregon.

We would love to hear some of the names you wish to share with us!

CipCip is a coloured enameled ceramic birdhouse. It is ready to be hung up outdoors, to provide a warm winter shelter for small birds and a safe nest for large hatches. Thanks to its natural materials, such as hemp rope and unleaded enamels, CipCip is a unique long-lasting object to be used in your garden.

HSUS. Hurricane. Shelter.

Posted in Health, News on September 2nd, 2008 by PM

It’s been quite a Labor Day weekend for the HSUS emergency response teams. Since last Friday, they have been on the ground in Louisiana to help with the evacuation of thousands of animals out of the path of Hurricane Gustav.

At the request of the Louisiana SPCA and Louisiana State Animal Response Team, the teams took to the road early Friday morning in three disaster response semi trucks to help local authorities and volunteers from other humane organizations set up emergency shelters and relocate thousands of animals out of harm’s way.

In Shreveport, home to the largest emergency shelter in the state, many of the animals were fortunate to have their families nearby. This win-win situation came out of one of the important lessons learned from Katrina: many people won’t leave home without their pets.

Nor will first responders. Many of the animals we evacuated and cared for belonged to those police officers, fire fighters and other emergency workers. We are honored to help the companion animals of those who risk their own lives for the greater good.

A number of the dedicated emergency workers on our team remember all too well the difficulty of helping the animals in the chaotic aftermath of Katrina. This time, in preparation for Gustav, the emergency shelters were ready to go and were run with great care and attention to detail that just wasn’t possible during Katrina. Recycled pets. An option.

Getting a new pet? Investigate the options at your disposal. Maybe consider adopting an older animal. Also do your homework concerning spaying and neutering.

Take care of your pet. Take them to the vet on a regular basis. Don’t raise a pet to be homeless. Whatever option you choose, please be responsible.

Pets suffer from Midwest flooding too.

No-kill shelters form vast networks to save dogs and cats for adoption.

Lesley Irwin scrolls through 200 pitiable e-mails a day to pick out the lucky dogs and cats she can keep in her Huntley pet shelter, then anguishes over the many she has to turn away. Read the rest of this entry »

More strays linked to once-happy homes.

Posted in Issues/Opinions, News, Tips/Info on June 24th, 2008 by hesso

On average, caring for a cat costs $1500 annually and a dog $2000.

With the U.S. economy currently on very shaky ground the falloff is tighter family budgets or worse, completely new business models for family households. In an effort to help keep households together, including family pets, let’s talk about possibly surrendering your pet to a shelter, how to pinch pennies on pet-care, and, a philosophic POV on saving animals.

Downsizing the family to make ends meet.

If you feel that you really can no longer afford your pet please consider finding another family for your pet first. If you can’t find a foster home then take the animal to a shelter, don’t abandon your animal. Here’s a story that was in the Chicago Tribune several weeks ago…

More strays linked to once-happy homes.
The sad stories have been all over the news. Pet owners who have fallen on hard times are coming into shelters and reluctantly, sometimes tearfully, surrendering their animals. Read the rest of this entry »
