Dolphins play with rings.

Posted in Editor's choice, Mammals, Movies, Oddly enough on November 12th, 2008 by PM

The attached video is of dolphins playing with silver colored rings which they have the ability to make under water to play with. It isn’t known how they learn this, or if it’s an inbred ability. As if by magic the dolphin does a quick flip of its head and a silver ring appears in front of its pointed beak.

The ring is a solid, donut shaped bubble about 2-ft across, yet it doesn’t rise to the surface of the water! It stands upright in the water like a magic doorway to an unseen dimension. The dolphin then pulls a small silver donut from the larger one. Looking at the twisting ring for one last time a bite is taken from it, causing the small ring to collapse into a thousands of tiny bubbles which head upward towards the water’s surface. After a few moments the dolphin creates another ring to play with. There also seems to be a separate mechanism for producing small rings, which a dolphin can accomplish by a quick flip of its head.

An explanation of how dolphins make these silver rings is that they are ‘air-core vortex rings’. Read the rest of this entry »

Cat furniture is typically “catty”, you know the carpeted kind with ramps and boxes. Reminds you of the ape house furniture at the zoo. It does little for that home decor statement if you are into that sort of thing. Here is a pleasant, and good looking solution for the visually inspired.

Kittypods are made of industrial-grade corrugated cardboard, laminated in contours of high-end modern decor. Their earthy hues, texture, and curvy, curious shapes make them equally at home amid rustic or contemporary surroundings.

They are pricey at $250 to $350, but are built to last. And cats love them according to their designer, Elizabeth Paige Smith, a life-long cat lover. Cats love the texture of the cardboard because it’s great for scratching, and they love the shapes, which are great for stretching and hiding both in
and under.

It’s those bears again!

Some people build swimming pools in their back yards. But outdoor pools in Alaska just won’t work.

Since this particular family lives on the outskirts of Anchorage, they decided to build a sturdy, colorful playground for their 3 and 4 year old sons, with smooth-stone gravel all around it to avoid knee scrapes and other injuries.

They finished building it on Saturday evening, and the following morning, as the Mom was about to wake up the boys and have them go out to play in their new play center, this is what she saw from the upstairs window.

Saudi Arabia. Bans dogs and cats.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — To keep the sexes apart in the state capital, a pet ban is in effect. As every single man knows: Walking a dog in the park equals sure babe magnet. Saudi Arabia’s Islamic religious police, in their zeal to keep the sexes apart, want to make sure the technique doesn’t catch on here. Read the rest of this entry »

THE BIG IDEA: Every summer, male songbirds called lark buntings shed their dull winter plumage and fly north from Mexico and Texas to build ground nests on the short-grass prairie of the Pawnee National Grassland, northeast of Denver. By the time female birds arrive two weeks later, the males are brightly adorned, often with glossy black feathers and white wing patches that flash as they zoom skyward and float back to the ground, singing all the while. These fancy traits and aerial displays may ward off other males, and they also send a come-hither signal to females. Scientists have always assumed that female birds, looking for good fathers, consistently choose males that exhibit the same exaggerated sexual traits. But my research shows that their preferences change from year to year. Sometimes females even select partners that look completely different from the previous season’s mates. Cat out of the bag.

Posted in Oddly enough, Tips/Info on March 28th, 2008 by hesso

What’s it mean? It means revealing a secret. Where did that
expression come from?
cat-o-nine1.jpg

Graham’s Random Ramblings. says, “Would appear as though in days of past one would trot off and buy a pig from your local butcher at the market. The pig would be placed in a bag for convenience. (The bag was called a “poke”). A dishonest butcher would replace the pig with a big cat. Now, if you opened the bag later, to find out that you had been taken for a ride, the cat was “let out of the bag”, the Butchers secret was exposed.

Back to the poke. If you buy a pig in a poke you have bought something worthless. From the same origin.

A number of sources say this is not true, the cat referred to is the cat ‘o nine tails, used to flog sailors in the Royal Navy. The whip was kept in a bag, and when taken out, it meant that the flogging was a certainty.”

Now Wikipedia didn’t know that!

Dolphin appears to guide whales to sea

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP)—Most days, Moko the bottlenosed dolphin swims playfully with humans at a New Zealand beach. But this week, it seems, Moko found his mojo. Witnesses described Wednesday how they saw the dolphin swim up to two stranded whales and guide them to safety. Read the rest of this entry »
