Maukie the cat!

Dachshunds and pig.

Posted in Editor's choice, Humor, Mammals, Oddly enough, Photos on November 12th, 2008 by PM

This Dachshund is fostering this little pink pig for his mom who couldn’t take care of him.
His eyes were closed and but now they’re open and he’s just a bit bigger than her pups.
She loves this little guy as much as her puppies and she is nursing him back to health.

He is the cleanest pig-uppy ever because she licks him all the time.

HIS NAME IS PINK…

SNIF tag.

Holiday shopping. Here come the animal products!

Social networking is not just limited to you and your friend. Woof! Yes, you heard right! The SNIF tag is a wireless gadget that clips onto a dog’s collar. As you take your dog for a walk amongst all the other SNIF-enabled hounds at your local park, the tag records your dog’s erm, interactions and shares the data with other tags.

Back at home, the tag uploads its data to your online SNIF profile, which allows you to share as much personal information with other SNIF owning dog lovers as you can handle. Too much information? This could be THE dating magnet of the year!

For the designer backstory, here’s a video clip of SNIF tag production.

The power of the dog.

Posted in Artworks, Stories on August 14th, 2008 by hesso

by Rudyard Kipling

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie–
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find–it’s your own affair–
But…you’ve given your heart for a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!);
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone–wherever it goes–for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart for the dog to tear.

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ‘em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long–
So why in Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Saudi Arabia. Bans dogs and cats.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — To keep the sexes apart in the state capital, a pet ban is in effect. As every single man knows: Walking a dog in the park equals sure babe magnet. Saudi Arabia’s Islamic religious police, in their zeal to keep the sexes apart, want to make sure the technique doesn’t catch on here. Read the rest of this entry »

Birds do it.

Posted in Birds, Movies on May 16th, 2008 by PM

HELLO. S.E.X. Chirp. Mature post!

The birds are certainly chirping in our hood these past few weeks. Maybe it is just Spring in the air. Maybe it’s just romance. Let’s fall in love.

Sex and single bird.

Written by researchers around the world, highlights new discoveries in the sciences and what they mean for your outlook.

THE BIG IDEA: Every summer, male songbirds called lark buntings shed their dull winter plumage and fly north from Mexico and Texas to build ground nests on the short-grass prairie of the Pawnee National Grassland, northeast of Denver. By the time female birds arrive two weeks later, the males are brightly adorned, often with glossy black feathers and white wing patches that flash as they zoom skyward and float back to the ground, singing all the while. These fancy traits and aerial displays may ward off other males, and they also send a come-hither signal to females. Scientists have always assumed that female birds, looking for good fathers, consistently choose males that exhibit the same exaggerated sexual traits. But my research shows that their preferences change from year to year. Sometimes females even select partners that look completely different from the previous season’s mates. Show-me.

Posted in Tips/Info on April 10th, 2008 by PM

To put a face to the name of the person you are blogging with, here is my screenshot of a post I am developing about, yep you guessed it, piggies.

screen-pigs.jpg

These piggie images are 800px wide, about the average “source” image size. They will be displayed at 400px. If this blog was a two-column layout, the images might have been displayed at 600px. To put the screenshot in perspective I am using a 24 inch Cinema Display and all those icons along the right side are SOME of the applications I use. One dreads upgrades.

I have several analytical helpers to tell me who visits PM. Info includes, pages visited, referrers, search key words, country, computer software, size of screen, incoming links, outgoing links, with many many options I don’t use yet. You get the idea.

It comes as a surprise, from my traffic at least, the Internet Explorer browser is used less than 10% with Firefox in the 80% range. If you are developing ( coding ) sites, that is good news if you know what I mean. 1/2 of my visitors are unique. 60% from the USA, I am in Chicago. 15% from direct links, 45% from other sites, 40% from searches. Stumbleupon visitors are my biggest repeat referrers.

Oh, and if you have anything on piggies, please let PM know.

Well, that’s enough about me. Put a face to your name and let’s hear a little more about you. To do that here are easy to follow instructions to contact the same folks plus new friends. Read the rest of this entry »

This is #2 in a series of nature photography. The images are winners in the prestigious 2007 Nature’s Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Awards.

The competition includes the Grand Prize and winners in 15 categories. More than 17,000 entries were submitted from photographers from 26 countries around the world to document the beauty, variety, and importance of Earth’s wildlife and wild places.

“Even thought this mother appears to be resting, she is very attentive and highly protective of her cub. Mothers nurse their young until they are almost three years of age and her milk is among the richest of any animal in the world with 30 to 40% fat content. This enables her young to quickly add a layer of protective fat that will help them survive in the Arctic environment.” Read the rest of this entry »

You do not have to be tagged to play along. This game is simple and so are the rules.
1. Copy from *Start Copy Here* through *End Copy Here*
2. Add your site(s) to the list. Just be sure to post at each site you add.
3. Tag or don’t tag, your choice, however, the more tags you create the bigger the list will grow.
4. Let me know your blog’s name and url by leaving me a comment HERE. I will add you to the master list. (If you would like the scroll box code, leave me your email address and I will email it to you.)
5. Come back and copy the master list back to your site, often. This process will allow late-comers to get as much link benefit as the first ones in. Read the rest of this entry »
