Are dangerous dog registeries a good idea?

Posted in Death, Issues/Opinions, Law, Mammals, News on August 22nd, 2007 by PM

The first article I read on this topic was dated March 2005 from Fairfax County Virginia, so this is not exactly a new idea. Two years later we have the following article revisiting this issue…

Dangerous dogs in Virginia get online registry.

RICHMOND, Virginia: Bear is a golden retriever-shepherd that attacked a bicyclist. Dee Dee, a pit bull mix, killed a cat. Cody, a Labrador mix, bit the neighbor.

Their mug shots, misdeeds and home addresses went online last week at Virginia’s Dangerous Dog Registry, a new Web site modeled after the state’s sex offender registry. It lets residents locate dogs in their county that have attacked a person or animal, and that a judge decided could cause injury again.

Created after dogs killed a toddler and an 82-year-old woman in separate incidents over the last two years, Virginia’s registry is part of a growing effort by states to deal with canines deemed dangerous. Thirty-one states now make owners legally liable if their dogs maim or kill, and in 2006 Ohio became the first state to ban some breeds outright.

In the last two years, nearly 100 municipalities have taken similar steps - banning pit bulls, Rottweilers, English bull terriers and American staffordshire terriers, or passing regulations that require owners to use muzzles or short leashes in public, according to the American Kennel Club. Gracie found! And who/what is Team Vivi.

Posted in News, Stories on August 14th, 2007 by carlyn

Theresa Hoang, the owner of runaway Gracie, sent an email to Team Vivi members thanking them for their help—from posting fliers to calling veterinarians — which ultimately made the Italian greyhound’s ending a happy one.

“I would like to specially thank all of you for your tremendous help and support” when Gracie was wandering the streets of Brooklyn, she wrote. “I have never seen such a coordinated effort … I [would love it] if we could meet each other some day.

The dog was missing since July 15, 2007, in Brooklyn.

Home sweet home.

An endangered animal story by Nina, age 10.

I, Sara, a squirrel monkey, was hunting for my daily meal in the rainforest’s canopy: bugs, berries and leaves. I suddenly heard this noise that was so loud, it almost broke my eardrums! The tree I was in started to shake and I practically fell off! I quickly jumped into another tree, and the one I was in fell to the floor of the rainforest. After that exciting moment, I looked down, and saw a human with what I think was a chainsaw!

I quickly called all the animals, (yeah, even that pesky ocelot that kept on chasing me). We had a meeting to come up with a plan that would stop the human from cutting the canopy, and make him go back where he came from. “How about we tie him up with vines and send him down the Amazon!” Jaguar exclaimed. The Endangered Species Act of 1973.

Changes to Law That Saved Many Species May Result in Its Extinction

© Dawn M. Smith

The ESA as it is now proposed would not have saved many species. Minimizing the importance of critical habitat is one of the key issues in the changes being considered.

One of US wildlife preservation’s most important documents is being torn apart by the present administration. The way the Endangered Species Act of 1973 is being rewritten today might have spelled extinction for the California condor, the grey wolf, grizzly bears and the American bald eagles if it were in place when each of these species was being considered for listing.

Three issues are of concern. First, the new ruling, if approved, would only apply to species in areas they currently occupy, not their historic range. Secondly, states, not the federal government, would have the primary right to decide on how species are handled in their area. And finally, the ability to protect critical habitat would be severely reduced. Read the rest of this entry »

Humane Society takes timely aim at animal fighting.

Posted in Death, Issues/Opinions, Law, News on July 30th, 2007 by PM

The Humane Society brings up an issue that has national exposure. If you feel strongly about this issue this is the very best time to participate in any way you can…

In the past week, millions of Americans were introduced to the barbaric reality of dogfighting in America. On July 26, NFL quarterback Michael Vick appeared in court and pled not guilty to dogfighting-related charges.

But our mission is not only to see Michael Vick brought to justice. His case is a symptom of a larger problem: Dogfighting is a surging underground enterprise involving an estimated 250,000 dogs. The Humane Society of the United States wants to wipe out this industry and save these dogs from the violent fate that awaits them in the dogfighting pit. But to do so, we desperately need your continued support. Read the rest of this entry »
