Power 50—December 2007

Meet the most influential men under 45. These would include the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, OK. Sergey and Larry, rogerthat. Justin T, Yo. NBC Entertainment co-chair Ben Silverman, that’s a wrap. Harry Potter, alakazam! And #29 Iggy the Brussels griffin mix terrier, yip.

It was hard to say where public opinion was at the beginning but after a few days there were quotables. “We truly are learning so much as a nation. God bless that Iggy for all he has to say, and will continue to say.” “Just tell me the new mommy of Iggy isn’t Britney.” “This story REALLY needs to be put down and out of its misery.” “They saved his life, then cut off his balls. Maybe they’ll cover that on Wednesday’s show.” “They’re just using Iggy to try to drive Ellen DeGeneres crazy. Short trip…”

The story broke in early October. A month later it became “IggyGate: Iggy Ready to Talk” on ET. On 10 December the New York Post runs “Ellen Rebuilding Animal Shelters Nationwide to Rebuild Damaged Rep” which has former Meow Mix owner, Richard Thompson footing the bill. As recently as 15 December huffingtonpost.com posts the 13th Annual Top 10 PR Blunders List topping with “FEMA’s fake news conference” and “Iggy come home” at #4.

Details pats its write-up with “The winner in this drama? Iggy—who made Ellen, and all her millions of viewers, his bitch.”

This is off topic. A dose of year-end wisdom.

This may save your life.
Refresh yourself
of these things to do
in an emergency situation…

This is for you,
and for you to share
with your wife,
your children,
everyone you know.

1 Tip from Tae Kwon Do:
The elbow
is the strongest point
on your body.
If you are close enough to use it, do!

2 From a tourist guide
in New Orleans.
If a robber asks
for your wallet and/or purse,
DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM .
Toss it away from you….
chances are
that he is more interested
in your wallet and/or purse
than you,
and he will go
for the wallet/purse.

George Carlin. On aging.

Posted in Humor, Stories, Tips/Info on December 11th, 2007 by PM

This might seem a little off topic but towards the end George mentions “pets” so PM thinks this is right on topic! A dose of year-end wisdom.

Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we’re kids? If you’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions.

“How old are you?” “I’m four and a half!” You’re never thirty-six and a half. You’re four and a half, going on five! That’s the key!!

You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back.

You jump to the next number, or even a few ahead.

“How old are you?” “I’m gonna be 16!” You could be 13, but hey, you’re gonna be 16! And then the greatest day of your life . . . you BECOME 21. Even the words sound like a ceremony. YOU BECOME 21. YESSSS!!! Read the rest of this entry »

Should we euthanize the Yorkie?

Posted in Death, Issues/Opinions, Tips/Info on November 28th, 2007 by PM

My grandmother is ill and cannot care for her aging Yorkshire terrier.

Editor’s note: This is a letter to Cary Tennis, advice columnist, Salon Magazine

Dear Cary,

I am stressed and wrestling with an ethical dilemma: Would it be right to put down the 11-year-old dog of my grandmother, who has middle-onset Alzheimer’s disease?

It’s the eve of Thanksgiving and my grandparents are both here, with this dog, a tiny, whiny Yorkshire terrier who has learned to beg constantly. It’s not her fault; my grandmother forgets that she has just fed her, hears her whine (oh the sound of that whine!) and gives her another largish helping of steak or chicken or cookies, or whatever anyone happens to be eating at the time. As a result, the dog is overweight, out of shape (she will not walk more than five feet before stopping and dragging her feet), largely incontinent (I just wiped up hot dog pee 10 minutes ago), and the most annoying creature on the planet. I mean, I don’t have kids yet (I’m 24), but if this were my kid I would send it straight to boarding school.

Unfortunately, though, this dog is the center of my grandmother’s small and dimming world, along with my grandfather, who is in fine mental condition but has some cardiac problems — I think she likes to feel that the dog needs her and isn’t judging her for mental lapses (not that the rest of the family is, I think we’re doing a good job of stimulating and caring for her). My mom asked her once whether she would be more upset if she (her daughter) died or if the dog died, and she indicated that the death of the dog would make her more upset.
