We had friends come in from Long Beach, California over the weekend. They brought a CD with pictures they took on their dog beach. This exchange sparked a concept for a new series on PM. “Dog Beach” will be series of photos that YOU send to us hopefully. We have a dog beach nearby but it is a bit cold so our submissions are two months away. But don’t YOU wait! Here are photos taken by China and David.

A Pug is a toy dog breed with a wrinkly face and medium-small body. Pug puppies are often called puglets. The word “pug” may have come from the Old English pugg, which was an affectionate term for a playful little devil or monkey. The breed is often summarized as multum in parvo (”much in little”), describing the Pug’s great personality and small size.

An article in Salon “What I wouldn’t do for my cat” inspired the following letters (editor’s pick) regarding medical treatment for your sick pet.

My cat = my new carpeting

Last year, my husband got a nice bonus from work. The same week our cat, Leo, ate a penny (yes, ate a penny, in front of our two kids). Turns out that is a very awful thing for a cat to do. He ended up with pancreatitis, mouth infections, ulcers, was in an emergency vet hospital for a week on IV’s, all sorts of treatments. And, he pulled through. My kids love that cat–but the treatment? Took the bonus–ALL of it–over $5,000. I joked that the cat ate my new carpeting, which is what I had intended to spend the $5,000.

Yes, we love him and I am glad to have him, but I still think we were crazy to spend that much money on a cat. Read the rest of this entry »

World Animal Day occurs annually on 4 October. Animal welfare groups, sanctuaries, and individuals throughout the world hold special events to heighten public awareness of animal issues and to encourage people to think about how we as humans relate to animals.

History

World Animal Day was conceived at an ecologist’s convention in Florence, Italy in 1931 as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. October 4th was chosen as World Animal Day because it is also the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, a Catholic Church holiday which is often celebrated with an annual “blessing of the pets”.

Since then, it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and has been widely celebrated around the world. It is intended as a day of celebration for anyone in the world who cares about animals.
