Earth Hour 2008. Plus 24×7.

Posted in Issues/Opinions, News on April 6th, 2008 by PM

It’s been a week since Earth Hour 2008. So we looked around to see what happened then, and if anything since…

A student told me Google went black! Good for them. This is how my mind envisioned a black Google.

Earth Hour officials indicate last year there were 2.2 million who participated in a one-hour effort to bring awareness to energy conservation. Yesterday, they estimated that number was around 10 million. In Chicago, the Sears Tower, the John Hancock, the Wrigley Building, and the Tribune Tower dimmed decorative lights, while 500 McDonald’s throughout Chicagoland turned off their golden arches. In the theatre district, marquees went dark, and Elphaba, the witch from “Wicked” turned out the lights with a dramatic “spell”. Navy Pier’s iconic ferris wheel went dark and nearly every store on the Magnificent Mile turned out their lights. Read the rest of this entry »

Lights Off for Earth Hour 2008.

Posted in Issues/Opinions, News on March 24th, 2008 by PM

Earth Hour 2007 was a Sydney, Australia event to fight global warming by saving energy and raising awareness. On March 29, 2008, Earth Hour
goes global.

lightsoff11.jpg

Just a few days left before Earth Hour—March 29, 2008. 8-9pm. Between now and then send a reminder to your blogosphere connections to participate. You can continue to remind people about conserving energy for the rest of the year too! Here’s how…

1. Forward this information or create an original. (The image in this post is a photo taken from one of the many posters/signs/billboards in Chicago.)
2. Place your Earth Hour post on your blog along with these instructions…
3. Send a minimum of 5 bloggers—or your entire blogroll—to do the same. Notify them of the tag.
4. ADD your site to the list and place your blog’s name and url in a comment here to let me know you successfully forwarded this info. PM will acknowledge your success with a comment in your post. Email webmaster [at] petmonologues.com if you have questions. Read the rest of this entry »

Polar bears feeling more heat.

Posted in Endangered, Issues/Opinions, Mammals on March 17th, 2008 by PM

A few posts ago PM presented incredible polar bear photos. The images by themselves are remarkable. But the polar bear is more than the largest predator on this planet. They have become a global warming symbol. It’s an easy analogy. The bears live on ice. The ices is melting. Easy picture here. Here is another polar bear story, and another global warming hot-spot.

The bears may have more problems…

polarrug1.jpg

Today Salon.com. comes to the forefront highlighting yet another polar bear worry. Part of their story is in this post with a link to the full story…

If your idea of a good time is paying $25,000 to journey to the frozen north in Canada to shoot a polar bear—making you one of the more than 50 American “sportsmen” who do so every year—you’re not happy about the lawsuits and recriminations over whether the Bush administration should grant new protections to polar bears. After all, those darn regulations could interfere with your bringing home a furry white rug for your living room floor.

In the reams of press about the increasing deaths of polar bears, the role of trophy hunters and the Inuit who help them is often missing. In the Canadian territories where the polar bear lives, the government sets quotas for the number of bears that can be hunted each year. The Canadian Inuit, who are paid by hunters to help them stalk the bears, and American hunting associations have become vocal adversaries to environmentalists and Congress members who in recent months have battled the Department of Interior, with its Bush-Cheney oil connections, to safeguard the polar bear.

Today, there are between 20,000 and 25,000 polar bears worldwide, according to the World Conservation Union Species Survival Commission’s Polar Bear Specialist Group, which lists the species as “vulnerable.” Between 700 and 900 polar bears are shot every year, the majority of those taken in Canada, according to Andrew Derocher, a biologist at the University of Alberta, who chairs the Polar Bear Specialist Group. Of the approximately 600 polar bears shot in Canada, about 15 percent of those are killed by sports hunters, many of them American, who pay between $20,000 to $35,000 for the chance to do so. “Even thought this mother appears to be resting, she is very attentive and highly protective of her cub. Mothers nurse their young until they are almost three years of age and her milk is among the richest of any animal in the world with 30 to 40% fat content. This enables her young to quickly add a layer of protective fat that will help them survive in the Arctic environment.” Read the rest of this entry »

Animal power.

Designers and their following have a go at animal-powered messaging.

Everybody’s Poultry Magazine, January 1952 Dairy Today, January 2008

Was problem solving different 50 years ago? In design you didn’t have the computer at your finger tips. Nor Google. Nor blogs.

Blogs offer speedy feedback whether you wish it or not. Speaking of blogs, one can’t help noticing which blogs consist of one sentence, grunt or bleep commentary and those which are a bit longer winded. Blogs that generate the most in-depth discussion are politics, religion, science, technology, art and design. Probably because of their philosophical and analytical nature. One does wonder what a pet blog would look like if political, religious, aesthetics zealots would permeate the commentary.
Think it’s possible to intellectualize poop?

The upside to the rhetoric and commentary the blog format provides: opinions, inspirations, recollections, facts, networking, and not least of all, reading pleasure. Want another opinion? Pet bloggers, are grunters.

If you wish to have a front row seat in a discussion focusing on animal imagery visit designobserver Everyone loves to observe a good conversation! BTW we are supportive of the new cover design by D. J. Stout, Pentagram.

PM loves it because where there is conversation there is growth. We are all for raising animal awareness and continue to collect works that showcase animals in commercial messaging media via Bless the Animals.

Every time we used to go to the zoo it seemed all the animals were sleeping. In Buenos Aires, evidently, they’re just too well-evolved to be seen. Can you name them, let alone see them?

To promote the zoo’s guided tours, Del Campo Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi took five experts in camouflage and shot them hidden by their surroundings. Count on mimicry to apply to human advertisers too, once this gets around (Creativity, February 2008)
