Maukie the cat!

The skin-ny. Evolution.

A sequay from art to…endangered. What are the products below made of?

Fish skin! The jacket from salmon and found at the Textile Museum of Canada. The shoes by Puma are from the wolf fish. The bikini by Mio Destino from talapia.

The pros: waterproof, odorless (they are not fish sandwiches but cured hide), interesting patterns. The cons: not elastic like spandex, more like canvas. Yes, they are still animal products. But it does start one thinking about all the other materials available other than animal products.

Head to head.

While searching for talent for Caw to art! I visited Saatchi Online where the gallery has frequent week-long competitions called Showdowns. “The deer” brings new meaning to head-to-head.

Which reminds me. A hip asian place in our neighborhood, where everyone dresses in black/white. White tables. White art-free walls, pure, completely empty walls for two years—until two weeks ago. And now look at the walls. WTF.

Critter labels. Tails you win.

A new category: critter labels.
A leading market-research company, ACNielsen, has decided to define a wine category by its label design. A “critter label” is any label that features an animal, from a hippo to a frog to a penguin. They say 438 viable table-wine brands have been introduced in the past three years, and 18 percent— nearly one in five— feature an animal on the label. “Combined with existing critter labels,” the firm said in a summation of its research on this matter, “sales of critter-branded wine have reached more than $600 million.”

Finishing touches on billboard

Yellow Tail has recently launched one of its largest ad campaigns in the brand’s history, created by Cramer-Krasselt (New York). Featuring a tag line that reads “Tails, you win,” the ads include a variety of three-dimensional billboards and interactive print advertisements, including massive replicas of the famous 1930s Kit-Cat Clocks, glowing fireflies and temporary tattoos. The campaign also includes TV ads and event sponsorships and runs through December 2007.

Creative background: the distributor
WILLIAM J. DEUTSCH was apprehensive when he first agreed to import an unknown Australian wine called Yellow Tail into the United States in 2001. Its handsome black-and-yellow label featured what looked like a kangaroo, and he felt that animals had no place on wine labels. But he liked the wine. “So,” he said recently, “I agreed to take 25,000 cases.”

His son Peter disagreed about the animal. “That label is fabulous,” he told his dad. Read the rest of this entry »

Kool Stools.

Posted in Mammals, News, Oddly enough on October 26th, 2007 by roxhart

My friend Lisa came over just before my Friday “Kool Stools” event to do a quaisi-quality control once-over. If you remember, these are the new stools I am creating, they are really “kool.” She found very few “fixes” but I was totally taken back when she noticed dog hairs in the finished products. Had already done tags to include the disclaimer “streaks, globs and other imperfectioins are intentional.” So, while we got most of the Roxy hairs out, I decided to revise my tags to say, “streaks, globs, dog hairs and other . . .”

Then took it another step and “issued” the attached press (see below) release. Had this with a photo of Roxy with her new title on the table with other collateral. The event was fine . . . learned a lot but don’ t think this audience is my best target—more work to do. People took info and might order later. Read the rest of this entry »

For those who are into design-driven products there is a company in Texas, One Form Design, that is pushing the envelope in pet-products. Here are two examples.

The Cat Cocoon

At this writing we are not sure if there is a push for “green” products although The Cat Cocoon fabricated out of a paper product might qualify. We will wait to hear from the designer. PM is currently looking where these products can be purchased. If you have retail information and/or are aware of other innovative products, please let us know. It would be appreciated.

World Animal Day is over for 2007. Start thinking ”creatively” about 2008.

Posted in Artworks, Bless animals, Endangered on October 9th, 2007 by PM

Bless the animals.

World Animal Day occurs annually on 4 October. Animal welfare groups, sanctuaries, and individuals throughout the world hold special events to heighten public awareness of animal issues and to encourage people to think about how we as humans relate to animals.

World Animal Day Mission Statement

* To celebrate animal life in all its forms
* To celebrate humankind’s relationship with the animal kingdom
* To acknowledge the diverse roles that animals play in our lives from being our companions, supporting and helping us, to bringing a sense of wonder into our lives
* To acknowledge and be thankful for the way in which animals enrich our lives

History

World Animal Day was conceived at an ecologist’s convention in Florence, Italy in 1931 as a way of highlighting the plight of endangered species. October 4th was chosen as World Animal Day because it is also the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, a Catholic Church holiday which is often celebrated with an annual “blessing of the pets”.

Since then, it has grown to encompass all kinds of animal life and has been widely celebrated around the world. It is intended as a day of celebration for anyone in the world who cares about animals. It is not restricted to any one nationality, creed, religion, political belief or ideology. Read the rest of this entry »

How to green your pets. Part 2.

Posted in Green, Issues/Opinions, Tips/Info on October 7th, 2007 by PM

Eco-friendly pet toys and accessories…

Get green! Make a statement! For you and your pet!

“I think people should be more aware and not just assume everything is safe,” says Chicago veterinarian Julie Mayer. “They should be skeptical and critics of products out there.

“We need to read the labels. We have to educate ourselves, because no one is going to help us out, unfortunately.”

greenbone.jpg

Here, then, are a few ways you and your dog and cat can live greener lives, and some problems to watch out for.

Wipe and paws

Wash their feet after they come in. What the dogs pick up from outside—animal and human waste, traces of pollution and car exhaust, etc.—can find its way into their systems as they groom themselves. Anything you can do to keep them clean is beneficial. Read the rest of this entry »

Designer-fill-in-the-blank.

Posted in Editor's choice, Issues/Opinions, Reader's choice, Stories on October 2nd, 2007 by Mr. Rodney

Recently I read an article about dogs. It defined purebreds, hybrids, and mutts. The “hybrid” was labeled a “designer dog.” Of course this was the one I was most interested in. I am a designer.

What the hell does “designer-fill-in-the-blank” mean? Dogs are labeled “designer dogs” because many of them are bred “by design” for specific reasons like minimizing allergies to shedding and dander, having good temperaments as family pets, and eliminating excessive drooling. Is “designer-this-or-that” an admirable label? I can’t deny it, “designer dogs are pretty popular.”

doodle-2.jpg

The design thing:
“By design.” You know, everybody knows, designers are “trained” to arrive at beautiful looking and/or beautiful working solutions. It’s part of the process. It’s what we do. In a perfect world designers always use the process for our work-for-hire solutions. Some use the process for personal solutions, like “living and breathing” design. 24 x 7. I can think of several as we write. Read the rest of this entry »
