Maukie the cat!

Dolphins play with rings.

Posted in Editor's choice, Mammals, Movies, Oddly enough on November 12th, 2008 by PM

The attached video is of dolphins playing with silver colored rings which they have the ability to make under water to play with. It isn’t known how they learn this, or if it’s an inbred ability. As if by magic the dolphin does a quick flip of its head and a silver ring appears in front of its pointed beak.

The ring is a solid, donut shaped bubble about 2-ft across, yet it doesn’t rise to the surface of the water! It stands upright in the water like a magic doorway to an unseen dimension. The dolphin then pulls a small silver donut from the larger one. Looking at the twisting ring for one last time a bite is taken from it, causing the small ring to collapse into a thousands of tiny bubbles which head upward towards the water’s surface. After a few moments the dolphin creates another ring to play with. There also seems to be a separate mechanism for producing small rings, which a dolphin can accomplish by a quick flip of its head.

An explanation of how dolphins make these silver rings is that they are ‘air-core vortex rings’. Read the rest of this entry »

SNIF tag.

Holiday shopping. Here come the animal products!

Social networking is not just limited to you and your friend. Woof! Yes, you heard right! The SNIF tag is a wireless gadget that clips onto a dog’s collar. As you take your dog for a walk amongst all the other SNIF-enabled hounds at your local park, the tag records your dog’s erm, interactions and shares the data with other tags.

Back at home, the tag uploads its data to your online SNIF profile, which allows you to share as much personal information with other SNIF owning dog lovers as you can handle. Too much information? This could be THE dating magnet of the year!

For the designer backstory, here’s a video clip of SNIF tag production.

During the early 1940s Charles and Ray Eames developed a successful technique for molding plywood into three-dimensional shapes, which led to the creation of a variety of furnishings and sculptures. Our apologies, you won’t find Eames donkeys however. That said, if anyone finds appropriate donkeys, or other animals for that matter, please give us a shout!

CipCip is a coloured enameled ceramic birdhouse. It is ready to be hung up outdoors, to provide a warm winter shelter for small birds and a safe nest for large hatches. Thanks to its natural materials, such as hemp rope and unleaded enamels, CipCip is a unique long-lasting object to be used in your garden.

I’ve always admired the artful salt and pepper mills William Bounds produces. Here are two new ones fit for a pet blog. A leopard. A zebra.

Pep Art Animal Print Gourd Mills
The Pep Art collection of mills is functional art deco art designed by Robert Wilhelm. Inspired by Native American totems and fetishes, these colorful, hand-painted mills also are ergonomic and designed for a lifetime of use. The animal print design is a new variation of our popular Gourd mill. As all mills from William Bounds, the Pep Art collection features a stainless steel shaft and high-output ceramic milling mechanism that may be used either as a pepper mill or salt mill!
