Are dangerous dog registeries a good idea?

Posted in Death, Issues/Opinions, Law, Mammals, News on August 22nd, 2007 by PM

The first article I read on this topic was dated March 2005 from Fairfax County Virginia, so this is not exactly a new idea. Two years later we have the following article revisiting this issue…

Dangerous dogs in Virginia get online registry.

RICHMOND, Virginia: Bear is a golden retriever-shepherd that attacked a bicyclist. Dee Dee, a pit bull mix, killed a cat. Cody, a Labrador mix, bit the neighbor.

Their mug shots, misdeeds and home addresses went online last week at Virginia’s Dangerous Dog Registry, a new Web site modeled after the state’s sex offender registry. It lets residents locate dogs in their county that have attacked a person or animal, and that a judge decided could cause injury again.

Created after dogs killed a toddler and an 82-year-old woman in separate incidents over the last two years, Virginia’s registry is part of a growing effort by states to deal with canines deemed dangerous. Thirty-one states now make owners legally liable if their dogs maim or kill, and in 2006 Ohio became the first state to ban some breeds outright.

In the last two years, nearly 100 municipalities have taken similar steps - banning pit bulls, Rottweilers, English bull terriers and American staffordshire terriers, or passing regulations that require owners to use muzzles or short leashes in public, according to the American Kennel Club. Barney the snail.

Posted in Death, Fish, Humor, Stories on August 17th, 2007 by PM

by Odessa (?)

Hi my Friend,

Oreo, I’m so sad to have to tell you this: Barney, one of our pet apple snails, died this Christmas eve. We were all very sad. Mom even cried. Barney and Mom were very close you know.

After Mom removed Barney from her home aquarium and put her to rest, Mom dried her eyes, pulled up a chair and started to tell us all about Barney’s life.

It was not a sad story Mom told us, Oreo, and it wasn’t not only about Barney’s life. This story of Barney’s life could be the story of millions of other pet apple snail lives all rolled into one story. I decided that I wanted to shareher story with you Oreo as I know you will be as interested init as I and my mates were.

Barney’s life was not at all like our lives. Barney was an amphibious snail. Where as you and I will live all our life on dry land, amphibious snails like Barney live their lives in water but they must come up to the surface of their aquariums, streams or ponds to breathe. They also lay their eggs just above the water’s surface. The rest of the time they spend under water. Read the rest of this entry »

Iberian Lynx Confronts Extinction With Help From Humans

Dawn M. Smith

Captive breeding and prey base restoration being used to aid recovery but loss of habitat and human interaction issues need to be addressed for lynx to stay in the wild.

iberian_lynx.jpg

The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) has been named the most endangered wild cat by the IUCN. It is feared that it may become the first wild cat to go extinct in nearly 2000 years. In a strange twist of fate, the loss of a common animal, the rabbit, has been a major contributing factor to the decline of the species. But habitat fragmentation also plays an important role, as does harassment by humans. Steps to recover the species include a captive breeding program, a rabbit population restoration project, public education programs and creation of reserves where Iberian lynx are protected. Red Wolf: Dog Named Balto

Posted in Artworks, Death, Editor's choice, Endangered, Just kids, Mammals, Reader's choice, Stories on August 10th, 2007 by PM

An endangered animal story by Kyle, age 10.

One day in the Woods of No Return a sheep was attacked by a pack of Timber Wolves. At first the Timber Wolves broke the sheep’s leg, and made it bloody.

Then out of whom knows where came Balto the Red Wolf/Dog with his reddish brown fur and brown eyes. Balto chased three wolves away. Four of them howled and shouted out at Balto, “Timber.” Then out of who knows where came an avalanche. Balto quickly pushed him and the seriously injured sheep to the side while they watched the huge mass of snow go by.

Then Farmer Fred came out of his house, and saw Balto next to the sheep and thought he tried to kill it. So he rushed into his house and got his rifle, but Balto was gone by the time he got outside. The one thing Farmer Fred did not know about Balto is he does not eat live puny sheep he only eats dead puny sheep. Farmer Fred was eager to get Balto, and all the Red Wolves that live around him. Red Wolves are endangered and Farmer Fred wanted Red Wolves extinct. Red Wolves are endangered because they go after sheep and farmers kill them. Read the rest of this entry »

Talk about a tough lady! A woman killed a raccoon with her bare hands Thursday when the animal attacked a young boy. Man sent to hospital by decapitated snake.

And here I thought it was only things like say - oh, flatworms and cockroaches that you could cut off the heads off - and still have them live. All right, I’ll be honest, I don’t think it was really alive. But at any rate - 53-year-old Danny Anderson learned the hard way it could still bite. Read the rest of this entry »

Demon Squirrel Interview #1

Posted in Humor, Mammals, Stories on August 9th, 2007 by PM

A “campfire” story taken from writing.com

[Introduction] Greetings!

note: Hooves of Fire! = author, WRITEING = Demon Squirrel

I, Hooves, have risked life and limb to travel to the deepest recesses of evil for this exclusive (and I hope Emmy winning) interview with the one and only Demon Squirrel. Due to the extreme evil of his countenance, I cannot look directly at him. He will be behind a curtain, speaking through the voice of Ercole who has kindly volunteered to channel the horrible demon’s answers to all of us.

This campfire will consist of me asking the questions (one at a time) and His Evilness answering through the Writeing of ercole, keeping his responses to 5 sentences or less if possible.

And now for the first question as soon as the campfire invitation is accepted. Read the rest of this entry »
