Earth Hour 2008. Plus 24×7.

Posted in Issues/Opinions, News on April 6th, 2008 by PM

It’s been a week since Earth Hour 2008. So we looked around to see what happened then, and if anything since…

A student told me Google went black! Good for them. This is how my mind envisioned a black Google.

This taken from the Chicagoist

Earth Hour officials indicate last year there were 2.2 million who participated in a one-hour effort to bring awareness to energy conservation. Yesterday, they estimated that number was around 10 million. In Chicago, the Sears Tower, the John Hancock, the Wrigley Building, and the Tribune Tower dimmed decorative lights, while 500 McDonald’s throughout Chicagoland turned off their golden arches. In the theatre district, marquees went dark, and Elphaba, the witch from “Wicked” turned out the lights with a dramatic “spell”. Navy Pier’s iconic ferris wheel went dark and nearly every store on the Magnificent Mile turned out their lights. Read the rest of this entry »

Meow. Haute dog.

I had a month to put together a post on animal clothing. Not to write the story but to get the photos. Oddly enough it seemed easy enough. That’s because ever since our excursion to South Beach several months ago, where there are no naked animals, it’s clearly obvious that animal fashion is big.

Researched “hundreds” of photos and sadly, could only select four. Maybe you can find some that merit more exposure. Please.

If you are going to dress up, this is tasteful. This gets a thumbs up.
clothes-dog1.jpg
This is not a dog. I know this person. It’s aunty Martha. Only two years and she’s come back.
arfdeco1.jpg
If you are going to dress up are you going to dress up like Bozo the Clown? No. This is a thumbs up.
cat-clothes1.jpg
Why aren’t there more cats dressing up? They would always do it right.
A thumbs up.

I am not sure when this phenom happened. Maybe it was always this way and I didn’t notice it. One thing for sure, the pet stores have morphed into something new. Not the big box stores, but the mom and pop’s, as smaller stores were once called. But that’s another storyline. Enter the pet boutique. They look like Filene’s Basement, Bloomingdales, Victoria Secret, or The Pleasure Chest (an adult clothing-apparatus store in our hood.)

Cat out of the bag.

Posted in Oddly enough, Tips/Info on March 28th, 2008 by hesso

What’s it mean? It means revealing a secret. Where did that
expression come from?
cat-o-nine1.jpg
Image: Hans Neleman

Graham’s Random Ramblings. says, “Would appear as though in days of past one would trot off and buy a pig from your local butcher at the market. The pig would be placed in a bag for convenience. (The bag was called a “poke”). A dishonest butcher would replace the pig with a big cat. Now, if you opened the bag later, to find out that you had been taken for a ride, the cat was “let out of the bag”, the Butchers secret was exposed.

Back to the poke. If you buy a pig in a poke you have bought something worthless. From the same origin.

A number of sources say this is not true, the cat referred to is the cat ‘o nine tails, used to flog sailors in the Royal Navy. The whip was kept in a bag, and when taken out, it meant that the flogging was a certainty.”

Now Wikipedia didn’t know that!

What about “Horse Feathers”? Read the rest of this entry »
