Here kitty kitty.

Posted in Editor's choice, Mammals, Oddly enough, Photos on September 3rd, 2008 by PM

These incredible photos of a White Bengal Tiger named Odin.

Odin is six years old and 10 feet long from tail to nose. Odin lives at a Zoo in Vallejo, California, near San Francisco

When a lump of meat was thrown into a pool of water, Odin would happily dive in after it.

“When you actually see him dive underwater he looks so graceful,”

Not all big cats enjoy the water but for Tigers from the hot climate of South-East Asia it’s one way to cool down.

“Plus they hunt in and around water. They’re an ambush predator so they wait for prey to come down to the water.”

“He makes a funny face - and it’s actually to close his nostrils to stop the water from going into his nose.

“Odin loves the water and he loves food,” he said. “Not all big cats will dive and swim underwater even for meat treats.”

Odin was hand-raised at the zoo. And after he was weaned, his British trainer Lee Munro discovered his remarkable skill.

Munro said tigers were the most powerful swimmers out of all land-dwelling animals. Tragically, within our lifetimes, zoos might be the only places left to see these magnificent animals.

A century ago there were about 100,000 tigers in the wild. Now there are just 2,500 adults, with the Bengal variety almost extinct. None has been seen in the wild sin ce the last white tiger was shot and killed in 1958. White tigers are the most rare. They get their white color from an unusual and extremely rare genetic combination.

I hope you enjoyed these photos as much as I did.

Yoda. The cat.

Posted in News, Oddly enough on September 2nd, 2008 by PM

Think you’re seeing double?

The household pet, named Yoda, was born with an extra set of ears.

Valerie and Yoda

Valerie and Ted Rock took him in two years ago after visiting a bar near their home in Chicago, where he was being passed round by curious drinkers. He was one of a large litter and the owners were looking for a home for him.

The couple immediately fell for the freaky feline and asked the owner if they could adopt him. He agreed and the couple named the cat Yoda, after the pointy-eared Jedi knight in Star Wars.

Valerie, 65, said: ‘We were at a pub on the south side of Chicago with a group of friends when we noticed a small cage sitting on the bar and people passing around a kitten.

‘He had been part of a large litter and the owners were looking to find a home for him.

‘Ted and I had just lost a cat that was our pet for over 20 years, and we were sure we were done with cats.

‘We decided to name him Yoda. I understand the Star Wars character was based on George Lucas’ cat.’ Read the rest of this entry »

Cat furniture is typically “catty”, you know the carpeted kind with ramps and boxes. Reminds you of the ape house furniture at the zoo. It does little for that home decor statement if you are into that sort of thing. Here is a pleasant, and good looking solution for the visually inspired.

Kittypods are made of industrial-grade corrugated cardboard, laminated in contours of high-end modern decor. Their earthy hues, texture, and curvy, curious shapes make them equally at home amid rustic or contemporary surroundings.

They are pricey at $250 to $350, but are built to last. And cats love them according to their designer, Elizabeth Paige Smith, a life-long cat lover. Cats love the texture of the cardboard because it’s great for scratching, and they love the shapes, which are great for stretching and hiding both in
and under.

Recycled pets. An option.

Getting a new pet? Investigate the options at your disposal. Maybe consider adopting an older animal. Also do your homework concerning spaying and neutering.

Take care of your pet. Take them to the vet on a regular basis. Don’t raise a pet to be homeless. Whatever option you choose, please be responsible.

Inflatable bears.

Posted in Artworks, Mammals, Oddly enough on August 15th, 2008 by PM

Trash bag polar bears that inflate and then deflate with the passing of subterranean subway trains. The artist, Joshua Allen Harris has not commented that this is a global warming statement, but that’s what many conclude. They do clutter up the street a bit. Fun concept!
