Gorilla marketing.

The folks at Very Short List (VSL) give us a plethora of something to think about on a daily basis. We can opt out, but we never will. We read the stuff and now we have an animal story to share.

This is a video recreated by super ad agency Fallon for Cadbury Dairy Milk in the UK. As VSL asks, “What’s a Phil Collins–obsessed, highly expressive gorilla could possibly have to do with a confectionery and beverage company escapes us.”

Let’s see the short flick.

A title appears: A Glass and a Half Full Production.
We start listening to the first sounds of ‘In The Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins. Read the rest of this entry »

Miss Spaz, the boa, eats her rat.

Posted in Photos, Reptiles, Stories on September 18th, 2007 by PM

As a new, and fresh, pet/animal site, PM is getting a lot of peeks. Most are from dog and cat lovers so we welcome visits when new animals are involved. An interesting site amazon-tree-boa links to us from time to time. We did the reverse to see where it would lead us. In a around about way, it happens, we have a snake eating a rat story.

***

“The Hog Island Boa finally picked a name and it’s Miss Spaz. Why you ask? She’s funny. Holding her, if she’s moving around and her nose comes into contact with my arm or hand, she’ll flip out and jerk back like she’s only just realized she’s being held. But mostly for the reason that’s under the cut.

Warning! Feeding pics. Don’t look if you don’t want to see the little psycho eating a rat. Don’t worry, the rat is pre-killed though, in a humane way, feeding live is bad.

boa_rat2.jpg

She doesn’t seem to notice that the rat is already dead.

boa_rat1.jpg

And I swear that when this started, she was completely in that hide. Then she darts out, snaps, coils and for some reason—every time—her tail comes shooting out to wrap the hide and look like it’s having a seizure. She is Miss Spaz.”

Kitty Crack: how to make super catnip.

Warning: though there is a bit of humor in this discussion, this is not a joke. Recklessness can cause injury, even death. Be responsible. Opinions and recommendations should be documented. PM does not endorse nor recommend anything other than the art of conversation.

“At least two thirds of domestic cats “enjoy” the effects of Nepeta, a.k.a. “catnip.” But do they enjoy it enough? If humans were able to isolate the active ingredient in catnip, could we not use it to become omnipowerful CATGODS? Imagine the possibilities! What fool wouldn’t want their own personal cat army? A massive fuzzy force with which to execute your every bidding? A united, unquestioning militia that requires nothing other than unfettered access to the super-powerful catnip products that give their adorable cuddly lives meaning.”— theinstructables.com Read the rest of this entry »

Food: Yogurt for your dog (and cat).

Posted in Food, Issues/Opinions, Mammals, Products, Professional on September 12th, 2007 by PM

There’s a relatively new pet-food product out: an organic yogurt treat for dogs. Let’s unofficially include cats too. After all, we did our research before posting this product. Is it good for people? Probably, in small doses. Talk about bait and switch!

It’s inspired by people food and organic ingredients. The packaging is hip. Somewhere on this blog someone said our pets eat better than we do. In some cases that is absolutely true!

Dog: Healthy feeding tips.

Posted in Food, Issues/Opinions, Mammals, Professional, Tips/Info on September 12th, 2007 by hesso

Anywhere people live, you’ll find dogs. Our species has made its way into nearly every nook and cranny in the world, and we’ve bred dogs to go with us. One of the main reasons why dogs are so remarkably adaptable is their ability to survive on a variety of foods. While cats need nutrients only found in a meat-based diet, a dog’s digestive system can pull the nutrients out of just about anything that’s edible. That’s why dogs don’t need as much protein in their diets as cats. Still, dogs are naturally meat eaters, so meat protein is still an important part of a dog’s diet. An all-around balanced diet is a six-part story: protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water.

Water

Fresh, clean water is more important to your dog than any other nutrient. About 70 percent of a dog’s body is made up of water, which is vital for cell function and tissue lubrication. Dogs can live for many days without food, but a lack of water will kill them quickly. When it’s hot outside, or if your dog is sick, especially if he is vomiting or has diarrhea, water is even more important.

If you drink bottled or filtered water because of the quality of tap water in your area, you may want to safeguard your dog’s health by also giving him bottled water or investing in a good-quality water filter for your tap. Read the rest of this entry »

Think parenting is tough? Try raising young osprey.

Posted in Birds, Stories on September 11th, 2007 by hesso

It’s better than a soap opera.

Since late March, my neighbors and I have been privy to the continuing saga of the trials and tribulations of a family consisting of papa and mama osprey and their very hungry, very noisy young. There are three of those.

Don’t think it’s easy to keep that growing trio of fledglings fed. It’s not as if the parents get to drive to a fast-food restaurant to pick up burgers and some chicken for supper. On the contrary, a lot of hard work goes into providing enough fish for three growing youngsters, plus the mother who gets to baby-sit while the babies are still defenseless.

It’s been estimated that one juvenile consumes close to 200 pounds during a typical season; multiply that times three and it is apparent the life of an osprey adult is not easy.

Last year an osprey pair nested on a snag farther down the river and although we were able to see some of the action, we were only able to observe them through binoculars. My neighbors, Paul and Phyllis, decided a closer nest would be a good addition to our neighborhood and last year they had an artificial nesting box put on a convenient snag closer to their house on the banks of the South Umpqua River.
