Here we feature a collaboration between Puma and Atmos NY, which consists of three pairs of Puma models inspired by three endangered
polar animals: the Harp Seal, Macaroni Penguin and Polar Bear. Each sneaker has its own unique design, but comes with the works of National Geographic photographer Mitsuaki Iwago featured on it, as well as a transparent outsole.

Each shoe in the collection captures the unique characteristics of a specific animal, and features Mr. Iwago’s photography on the removable insole. The name and habitat of each animal is on the reverse tongue and the outsole in both English and Japanese. The shoes were created in hopes of bringing attention to our impact on these endangered animals.

The second shoe in the Polar Pack is the PUMA x Atmos Polar Bear Clyde. Drawing direct inspiration from the polar bears of the Artic the shoe features an off white nubuck upper and fur collar, while the blue ice sole represents the Polar Bear’s natural habitat. The shoe comes with three sets of colored laces and have the Atmos “A” on the lace tips and heel. The Polar Bear is currently ranked as vulnerable and is considered to be facing a high risk of extinction in the wild.

The first squirrel ads may have appeared in 2001 for Geico, a Berkshire Hathaway-owned insurance company based in Washington, D.C. The tagline for the Geico commercials reads: “Fifteen minutes could save you 15 percent or more on car insurance.”

The Geico Gecko character was created by the Martin Agency, a Richmond, Virginia based ad firm. The latest Gecko animation is supplied by Framestore, a New York-based company.

TRIVIA NOTE: A follow-up of very funny 30-second Geico ads appeared in 2001. The series of three spots were called “Squirrel”, “Car Pool” and “Wuxia.” The “Squirrel spot (written by Joe Lawson and Raymond McKinney and art directed by Tye Harper) shows a couple of squirrels playing chicken on a country road that causes a car to swerve off the road and crash. Thrilled with their results, the giggling squirrels give each other a high-five for surviving the ordeal. Read the rest of this entry »

Designers and their following have a go at animal-powered messaging.

Everybody’s Poultry Magazine, January 1952 Dairy Today, January 2008

Was problem solving different 50 years ago? In design you didn’t have the computer at your finger tips. Nor Google. Nor blogs.

Blogs offer speedy feedback whether you wish it or not. Speaking of blogs, one can’t help noticing which blogs consist of one sentence, grunt or bleep commentary and those which are a bit longer winded. Blogs that generate the most in-depth discussion are politics, religion, science, technology, art and design. Probably because of their philosophical and analytical nature. One does wonder what a pet blog would look like if political, religious, aesthetics zealots would permeate the commentary.
Think it’s possible to intellectualize poop?

The upside to the rhetoric and commentary the blog format provides: opinions, inspirations, recollections, facts, networking, and not least of all, reading pleasure. Want another opinion? Pet bloggers, are grunters.

If you wish to have a front row seat in a discussion focusing on animal imagery visit designobserver Everyone loves to observe a good conversation! BTW we are supportive of the new cover design by D. J. Stout, Pentagram.

PM loves it because where there is conversation there is growth. We are all for raising animal awareness and continue to collect works that showcase animals in commercial messaging media via Bless the Animals.

Every time we used to go to the zoo it seemed all the animals were sleeping. In Buenos Aires, evidently, they’re just too well-evolved to be seen. Can you name them, let alone see them?

To promote the zoo’s guided tours, Del Campo Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi took five experts in camouflage and shot them hidden by their surroundings. Count on mimicry to apply to human advertisers too, once this gets around (Creativity, February 2008)

Our resident Yellow Crowned Night Heron
perched on the pier at dusk and posed patiently
while I memorized her theatrical black mask.
After a time, she turned full circle, fluttered
an operatic fan of dark spiky wings,
opened a long pointy beak,
spat something that bounced hard
–a brown ruby, perhaps—
and flew off to another engagement,
charging absolutely nothing for the show.
