Numero “Uno” against all odds?
Uno being the first beagle to win the Westminister Kennel Club Show in 132 events got PM thinking. What is, if any, is the significance of this win, for a beagle? For the “beagle” to win “Best of Show” what are the odds? The following are “unofficial” statistics quickly taken from the WKC site:

The breeds by group (31 judges )
26 hound (best of show winner)
28 terrier
18 non-sporting
21 herding
28 sporting breeds
25 working breeds
22 toy breeds
140 total breeds (140 dogs we assume?)
Best of group (seven judges) note: 1st thru 4th in order…
hound = Beagle, Dachshund, Harrier, Petits Bassets Griffons Vendeen
terrier = Sealyham Terrier, Scottish Terrier, Norfolk Terrier, Fox Terrier
non-sporting = Poodle, Bulldog, Bichons Frises, Tibetan Terrier
herding = Austrailian Shepherd, Bouviers des Fiandres, German Shepard, Collie
sporting = Weimanraner, Pointer, Cocker Spaniel(2)
working = Akita, Doberman Pinscher, Great Dane, Bullmastiff

What are the odds? What’s this do to beagledom? This going to affect future winners? Can anyone give an analogy here?

What’s in a name? Having had a couple of these dogs myself one learns the official pedigree names can be long. We had a standard poodle we called “Daisy” though her official name was in French, naturally, and had “Deja vu, black midnight, etc.,” I can’t recall the rest. And the winner’s name:
“Ch K-Run’s Park Me In First,” a.k.a. “Uno” It would be fun to learn the other dogs a.k.a.’s don’t you think?
and as a wrap-up, video clips behind-the-scenes via “Dummy”

the judge had no idea that a beagle had never won. i am not sure how much fan favorite factors into the mix- but everyone loves an underdog, especially one that chews reporters’ microphones, as uno did when his handler was being interviewed afterward.
being the proud pappy of a beagle, i am ecstatic. the breed is mischievous, ill-behaved, loud, and needy. to have these traits validated as “best in show” perfection shows that even stuffy judges have a heart and can look past grooming and recognize those traits that are endearing. (note: beagles are also loyal, lovable, playful, etc)
