Denver—American Humane Association Today Celebrates 130 Years Of Protecting Children and Animals.
One hundred thirty years ago today, on Oct. 9, 1877, a national organization was born with the mission of protecting children and animals from cruelty, abuse and exploitation. Back then, common practices like child labor, forcing animals to work until they dropped from exhaustion, and corporal punishment were considered the norm. But it was these very practices that the founders of the American Humane Association were determined to stop.
On that day 13 decades ago, at a conference in Cleveland, Ohio, representatives from 27 local humane societies from 10 different states formed American Humane to serve as a unified, national force to protect the most vulnerable members of our society. American Humane, headquartered in Denver since 1954, has consistently led the way in creating a more humane and caring society, from its early work to help abolish child labor, to its recent rescue of more than 300 animals affected by severe flooding in Oklahoma.
